Taurine is an essential amino acid for cats. Unlike most mammals, they can’t make enough of it themselves, so all of it has to come from their diet. Taurine deficiency in cats is well documented and is linked to dilated cardiomyopathy and retinal degeneration — which is exactly why it became a mandatory addition to commercial cat food in the late 1980s.
Supplementing raises taurine intake. That’s what it does, and that’s all it claims to do. Kriath™ is a nutritional supplement, not a medicine, and it isn’t a treatment for any condition.
Any food sold as “complete” has to contain taurine, so this isn’t about your food being bad.
The complication is that taurine levels fall during high-heat processing, and continue to fall slowly during storage and once a bag is opened. Manufacturers account for this by adding extra at the start — but the amount that actually reaches the bowl varies with the food, the batch, and how long it’s been open.

It’s odourless and tasteless, so it doesn’t change how their food smells or tastes. Give it daily rather than in bursts; taurine isn’t stored in the body in any useful quantity, so consistency matters more than quantity.
Taurine is water-soluble, so unlike vitamins A, D, E and K it isn’t stored in fat — what a cat doesn’t use is passed in urine. It has a wide safety margin and is well tolerated at supplemental levels.
That said, stick to the scoop provided rather than eyeballing it. And if your cat has diagnosed kidney or heart disease, or is on medication, check with your vet before adding anything new.
It’s an unflavoured, odourless powder and it disappears into wet food. Most cats don’t react to it at all.
For a genuinely fussy cat, start with a pinch for the first two or three days and work up to the full scoop. Mixing it into a spoonful of tuna water or plain bone broth first, then stirring that through the meal, also helps.

Fresh meat does contain taurine, but the amount varies a lot by cut — heart and dark muscle are far richer than lean muscle meat — and it degrades with grinding, freezing, thawing and exposure to air.
That’s why a lot of raw feeders supplement as a matter of routine rather than assuming the meat covers it.
If you formulate your own raw diet, it’s worth running your recipe past a veterinary nutritionist rather than relying on any supplement to balance it.

Taurine is used by the body to make bile salts, which are involved in digesting fat. But frequent vomiting in cats has many possible causes, some of them serious, and “he’s just a sensitive cat’” is not a diagnosis. If your cat is vomiting regularly, that’s worth a proper vet workup, and we’d rather say so than sell you a tub on a maybe.
Ask your vet first. A cat with diagnosed kidney disease is usually on a carefully managed diet, and whether to add anything to it is a decision for the person treating them — not for us.
